Step Up

I was asked by a local non-profit to create an adorned shoe that they could use at their upcoming luncheon, themed "Step Up" - as in step up (increase) your annual contribution. I was thrilled to participate! My understanding is that these shoes, created by local artists, will be used as centerpieces and then auctioned off. So, here is my creation. What do you think?

If you don't already know, I have launched a new etsy store called Rescued Paper where I sell journals that I hand-cover in old paper - maps, book pages, altered dictionary pages. I am having a great time doing this. I have always loved maps and dictionaries, both of which are increasingly obsolete due to our smart phones, computers and GPS devices. And while GPS can get you where you are going rather efficiently, there is nothing like studying a map, imagining places and seeing the bigger picture. So I am happy to give old maps one more go 'round with these journals.

I am working on another type of Rescued Paper product using the insides of security envelopes. You know them, the envelopes that have patterns printed on the inside so the contents isn't visible through the envelope. So I started saving them, thinking there must be something that I can come up with to recycle these babies. And while I work on that, I became smitten with the patterns. Have you ever really looked at them? It turns out there are so many different patterns. And they are so interesting. I don't know the history of this (but if I find it out I will certainly share) but I can't stop being fascinated with the variety and complexity of these hidden treasures. So I thought I'd share a few with you. And stay tuned to see what I do with them!

The Colors of Turkey

I continue to be inspired by my recent trip to Turkey. I already shared pictures of the amazing tiles, but this time I am sharing the colors - it is such a vivid place with many palettes. While Istanbul is vivid and energizing, I also spent some time in Cappadoccia, in the eastern Anatolian region. Here the palette is subtle, sandy and accented with blue skies.

I love to travel but the first few months of this year left me cherishing a night in my own bed. Starting with the huge International Gem Show in Tucson, followed by some time in San Francisco, Atlanta, and DC. And then all of that followed with a trip to Istanbul and Cappadocia, Turkey. Turkish Tile

The last month or so has been jammed full of travel for me. Tucson, San Francisco, Atlanta, Washington DC and most recently,Turkey. I promise a travelog post soon, but in the meantime I had to share photos of these beautiful Iznik tiles from Istanbul. From the Blue Mosque to Topkapi Palace these intricate tiles adorned the interior spaces of many buildings. I was mesmerized by their patterns and colors.

I usually try to avoid New Year's Resolutions. Although I could benefit from a diet, better exercise routine, etc. I rarely articulate these specific personal goals this time of year. Just too famously disappointing as these types of things usually go unfulfilled in the long run.

But this year I did set a business goal to clean out my studio. As you can see on the side bar to the right, I already sell off extra jewelry making supplies in an etsy store (if you make jewelry, check it out - I sell items pretty much at what I paid for them, or less, just to clear them out and create a little cash for buying new stuff!). But that only partially addresses the amount of stuff I have in my studio. So I have set up an online sale room where you can buy items from almost all my collections for mostly 50% - 60% off! Fur and Jewelry

Over the holiday season I did a few trunk shows with my friend David Kriegsman, who owns and operates Kriegsman Furs and Luxury Outerwear. David runs the oldest and most respected furrier in North Carolina. Kriegsman Furs was established in 1928 by David's father and the family tradition reaches back to the 1870s where David's family were prominent Austrian furriers.

For one customer, David designed some fox muffs as gifts for the customer's daughters. She bought two of my vintage collage brooches to add to the gift. Here are photos of the finished products - testimony to the wonderful fit between fur and jewelry!

David is a hard-working and creative businessman, and talented designer. And he has impeccable taste! He sells outerwear fashion from big name designers and designs and produces his own wonderful designs. For many years he has remodeled and repaired furs and leather outerwear for his customers. Combining this in-house sewing capability with his innate sense of fashion and design, he produces limited edition items of his own. Notably, he has designed some fabulous capes using the best Italian cashmere - some are trimmed with fur and some with intricate leather appliques.

The Kriegsman website says "come visit our retail store, trying them on is so much fun". And I have to admit after spending days selling my jewelry along-side all these luscious furs no statement could be more true! You can't help but touch, stroke and, yes, slip into one of his gorgeous coats just for the fun of it.

Debbie is an extraordinary artist who does faux finishes of practically anything on practically anything. You want wood to look like stone? You want your ceiling to look like the tiles of a palace in Marrakesh? You want something new to look old, or something old to look new? Debbie is your person.

One other thing about Debbie is that she always has her camera nearby and her artistic eye instructs what and how she shoots. We were together last spring at a trunk show and during a quiet time we played with her finishes, my jewelry, a particularly nice slant of light and her camera. Then last month the exotic and sophisticated design blog Artnlight wrote about Debbie and about our collaborative photo shoot. Artnlight is the blog of Vineeta Nair, and ex-advertising and art director in Mumbai, India who now writes about design, decor and India.

She has been featured in Elle Decor and it is no wonder. Her blog is beautiful and interesting and the products she designs are lovely. I feel a trip to India in my future (I always imagine travel to wonderful places!) and I will certainly be looking her up when I do get there. Meanwhile, click here to read her lovely blog entry. All Creative Work is Derivative

By using photographs of archeological artifacts from the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, this video makes the point that all creative acts are done in the context of society, other ideas and all that came before. We might enjoy the idea that we are uniquely creative, coming up with entirely new ideas, but in reality we are the result of our life experiences and our exposure to the creative product of all of society. Our work extends that which came before and provides influence on others around us and in the future. That is enough for me!

Twice a year I fill my showroom in High Point with loads of goodies for the highpointMARKET. This is a 6-day market, previously known as the International Home Furnishings Market. I look forward to this market every time. And this season I have developed a great collection. Lots of new Signature Collection pieces, and some new collections as well.

Happy Birthday September babies. The leaves are going to start changing soon (or not so soon for those of us living in North Carolina), and the rich colors of fall are a fantastic background for a special birthday celebration! In case you or someone who loves you wants to give a special birthday gift this year, I highly suggest a gift with your gorgeous birthstone, Blue Sapphire.

Blue Sapphire is truly a stone fit for a queen (and why shouldn’t you be treated like a queen on your birthday?). This gem is very prominent among the British Crown jewels and was even the engagement stone from Prince Charles to Princess Diana.

Far before the British Crown jewels, Blue Sapphire was considered a special gem. Ancient civilizations thought the whole world was set on a giant sapphire that painted the sky with its reflection. Some people believe that the Ten Commandments were actually written on tablets made of sapphire.

It was also believed that Sapphire would protect against jealousy and poisoning. When ground into a powder, Blue Sapphire was thought to cure colic, rheumatism, mental illness, and to strengthen eyesight.

The deep blue stone is a symbol of wisdom and purity. As a gift it represents sincerity and faithfulness.

Happy Birthday August! As school starts up again and it is back to the normal routine, it is just so easy to get caught up in the stress of everyday life and forget to value nature. What better way to remind yourself than with your very own birthstone, Peridot?

Historically, Peridot has always been viewed as a way to connect with nature. Egyptian priests drank a stimulating drink called Soma from cups made of Peridot because they thought it would help bring them closer to their goddess of nature.

The gem itself is formed as a result of volcanic activity—a fantastic remembrance of the awesomeness of nature. Peridot was found on the black sand beaches of Hawaii where natives believed that they were tears of the volcano goddess, Pele.

Ancients believed that Peridot would protect against evil and had many uses in medicine. When set in gold was it was thought to be especially helpful in preventing night terrors. It was also thought of as a remedy for asthma and a cure for thirst when ground into a powder.

As a gift, Peridot is a symbol of vitality and signifies strength and the promise of new growth in years ahead. It is a fantastic gift to remind someone special of the endless possibilities of the future!

Travel Diary: New Mexico

I just returned from a five day jaunt to New Mexico. While I stayed in the desert between Santa Fe and Albuquerque, I spent most of my days in Santa Fe. I had never been there before and had always wondered about this town that had a funky, artsy reputation. It lived up to that reputation, in a big way!

While it is somewhat true that this is where “old hippies” live, I found it to be a diverse and dynamic town. It is the oldest state capital in the country, celebrating its 400th anniversary this year and is in the high desert mountains at an altitude of 7,000 feet (as in, expect a headache and becoming easily winded the first day unless you live at this kind of altitude normally). A summer visit means heat, but dry heat, despite the afternoon thunderstorms. The architecture is old and new, but all consistently western, adobe-style buildings.

Santa Fe Architecture

I was fortunate enough to stay at the Tamaya Resort in Bernalillo, 20-some-odd miles outside of Albuquerque, pretty much in the desert. The hotel, adobe style in the middle of undeveloped land, felt like a sanctuary. Owned by Native Americans (but managed by Hyatt) the resort is on a reservation with expansive views of desert-scapes and looming distant mountains. Sitting on the balcony of our room, or the hotel veranda meant listening to the sound of the wind across the desert, or the scurrying of wildlife - it is *that* quiet here! It was peaceful, meditative and refreshing - especially the morning that a Native American musician gave an outdoor flute concert and the mellow tones floated across the landscape putting me into a trance.

Days in Santa Fe did involve a 45 minute freeway drive so if you really want to be in Santa Fe, stay in Santa Fe. But I found this desert oasis to be worth the driving. Santa Fe is a tourist town, and the first day there I visited galleries, shops and eateries on the Plaza, along with all the other tourists. Lots of interesting things to see, but quite "touristy" I thought. The further off the Plaza I wandered, the more interesting it got.

I discovered two incredible photographers in galleries whose work spoke directly to my soul. First the work of Lisa Kristine, on display at her own gallery on West San Francisco Street. Lisa Kristine travels, lives among and photographs the indigenous peoples on multiple continents. Her images are stunning and startlingly authentic. The second was the work of Jeffrey Becom on display at Verve Gallery of Photography on East Marcy Street. He is a writer, designer and “visual anthropologist” and similarly, his work results in his keen eye catching extraordinary beauty in ordinary places. .

Day two included a visit to the workshop of Sherry Stein who makes fantastic bags inspired by old carpenter bags and doctor bags. Her bags are all made from materials made in the US, by local workers who take great pride and a sense of ownership over what they make. I couldn’t help myself and I ordered this bag, which is being made to order for me. I am happily anticipating its arrival in a few weeks.

My third day there was a Saturday and I spent the first few hours of it at the Santa Fe Farmers Market. One of the top 10 Farmers Markets in the country, it was fabulous. There were many local, organic farmers selling squash blossoms, beets, sunflowers and lavender. I was immensely frustrated that I did not have a kitchen available to me, so all I could do was look and buy items I could consume in the next couple days. But the people watching was fabulous. Santa Fe Farmers Market style includes Keen sandals, a straw hat, long hair (even if it is gray) and lots of turquoise jewelry! So many people were dressed this way that I wondered if they had some kind of city-wide dress code! I did buy a cookbook named “One Taste; Vegetarian Home Cooking from around the World” by a Santa Fe resident Sharon Louise Crayton. It is about nourishing both the body and the spirit when cooking and provides meditations you can practice in the kitchen while you prepare the dishes.

The area around the Farmers Market, known as the Railyard, was filled with many interesting galleries and shops as well. Less commercial, less tourist-driven it was a pleasure to spend a day exploring this newer area, which also had some wonderful places to eat. I used the City Guide from design*sponge, which they recently updated. So if you go (and you should!) check it out for lots of listings of restaurants, galleries, shops and museums.

Any one who knows me and my jewelry knows how much I love Tibetan silver. The skill and craftsmanship that go into each piece, using age old techniques passed across the generations, is truly something to be treasured.

Unfortunately, not only is the skill being lost as the younger generation is less interested, it is being copied and knocked-off using machines and stamping techniques that mimic the look but cannot replicate it. The real deal pieces are exquisite and collectible. When I get some of them, I make them available to my customers. Right now I still have a few bracelets available online. Some day these won't be available anymore. Meanwhile, you can own one for yourself and enjoy the artisanship and design of these hand-made wonders.

Ruby and Gold Vermeil Earrings

Happy Birthday July! It sure is hot out there—maybe a nice pool party would be just the right way to celebrate your birthday this year! It is almost too appropriate that your birthstone, Ruby, allegedly has an internal flame that can’t be extinguished in this seemingly never-ending heat.

With its alleged internal flame, the ruby represents love and passion. Just like all you July birthdays, the Ruby has been considered extra special throughout the ages! It was called “Rajnapura” or “King of Gems” by ancient Hindus and was thought to have magical powers. Worn by ancient royalty as a talisman against evil, these royals believed that the Ruby would grow darker when the wearer was in danger and return to its original color when the danger had passed. On a more violent note, Ancient tribes actually used Rubies as bullets for blowguns (what a waste of all those precious gems!).

Rubies also represent heat and power. Folklore says that a pot of water will boil instantly if a Ruby is tossed into it. When ground into a powder and placed on the tongue Ruby was also said to cure indigestion (not recommended!). As a gift, Rubies symbolize everlasting love and make a gorgeous gift to someone really special. Ancient legend even says that when worn on the left hand, the Ruby will bring good luck to its wearer.

These quotations are from a little book I recently came across, published in 2000, called "A Short Guide to a Happy Life" by Anna Quindlen. I heard her speak last year and was so impressed, that I had to pick up this used book when I saw it. And now it is a cherished little morsel of inspiration for me. That is why I wanted to share some with you.

Pearls and Moonstones for June Birthdays

Happy birthday June babies! I hope you have exciting plans for celebrating. As promised, here is some information about your birthstones: Pearl, Moonstone, and Alexandrite.

Your traditional birthstone is unique (just like you!) in that it is the only birthstone that is organic, made from a natural, living material. Pearls are formed when an irritant, like a grain of sand, enters an oyster, mussel, or clam. In an attempt to stop the irritation, the mollusk creates a protective substance called “nacre”. Over time layers of nacre coat the irritant and create a pearl.

Scientists explain the existence of pearls with nacre, but ancient civilizations had much more creative, and entertaining, explanations. The ancient Greeks thought pearls were created from the hardened tears of joy shaken from the eyes of the goddess of love when she was born from the sea. Arab legend says that pearls were formed from oysters that were lured from the very depths of the ocean by the moon. Supposedly the oysters swallowed moonlit dewdrops and so pearls were formed. Ancient Chinese beliefs stated that pearls originated from the brains of dragons.

Said to be a favorite gem of Cleopatra, worn by nobility throughout the ages, and a symbol of femininity and grace, June you are truly lucky to have such a special birthstone!

Moonstone is also a birthstone of June. It gets its very appropriate name from its amazing resemblance to the sheen of the moon. Moonstone’s color varies from clear to bluish white to peach. Ancient civilizations believed the stone was sacred and gave the wearer great spiritual understanding. Some ancient people even believed that moonstone could make the wearer invisible! As a gift (and what a great gift idea it is!), moonstone symbolizes health and longevity.

Just in case pearls or moonstone aren’t your style, those of you with June birthdays have one more chance to love your birthstone with Alexandrite. Alexandrite is yellow or brownish green. It actually changes color when exposed to a glowing light source (like candlelight) to a red color (how cool!). As a gift, Alexandrite symbolizes joy and good fortune.

Why do we love the beach?

I am fortunate to have spent the last week on a serene and beautiful beach in South Carolina. It is my family's 14th year visiting this particular beach. We stay in a lovely beachy house, directly on the beach separated from the surf only by natural dunes. This is not a very populated beach and when the tide is out it is wide and flat. The sand is fine and the surf is warm and gentle.

The minute I arrive I feel a relaxation come over me. And every year I find myself wondering - what is it about the beach that is so compelling? Why is it that just standing on the water's edge, gazing out to the horizon, is so renewing?

I have heard that the percentage of salt in the ocean is exactly the same as the percentage of salt in our blood. I wonder if there is some primordial draw to the ocean. An evolutionary memory? It is also a uniquely broad expanse of space. There aren't too many other places on the globe where we can feel so connected to the vastness of nature - a similar feeling to a wide, clear night sky sprinkled with stars, or expansive views from mountain tops. These are moments when we can gain some perspective and context for our existence in this universe.

And then there are the mysteries of what exists below the surface. We collect shells that give us little hints of the life teaming in the sea. We get excited when we spot porpoises coming up for air as they parallel the shore, when we see schools of fish jumping up from the surface, or watch pelicans skim the surface and then dive for their meal.

The lighting at different times of day is another fascination for me - the silvery tones of the early morning, the sharp contrasts of high noon, and the softness of the evening sky. Water reflecting sky, sometimes the horizon disappears and everything can be seen as a continuum.

Whatever it is - the freedom and renewal, the relaxation and contemplation, bare feet and minimal clothing - for me, the week at the beach is a pilgrimage. A pilgrimage to beauty, nature and peacefulness.

And the seasons they go round and round

Most days I try to walk with my friend Terri and her adorable pooch Bella. We are fortunate to live in a beautiful part of the country that fully experiences all four seasons. While the winters are mild (yay!) and the summers are hot and humid (argh!) both spring and fall are spectacular here in North Carolina. I usually take a photo or two when the image strikes and I rely on these images for peaceful inspiration back in the studio.

As I mentioned a post back, I got new photo editing software and I have been busy playing with it. So here is my homage to the seasons as seen on my neighborhood walks, and as edited by me. Enjoy!

One of my creative outlets is photography. While most of my focus (pun intended) over the last few years has been on taking pictures of my jewelry (a whole world unto itself!), I have recently found a renewed interest in taking pix of the world around me. Often the only camera that I have with me is my iPhone and I end up taking the picture with it, often disappointed with the results.

So today, I downloaded a new photography app on my iPhone called Camera+ and I am blown away. It does all kinds of magic and gives you all kinds of magic editing tools. If you want a techie review, search Google for one. I just wanted to share my excitement! I feel like I got a shiny new toy and I am thrilled.

So, here are some photos that I edited just a bit and to which I added borders. The flower pot is on my front step, and I just went outside this afternoon and snapped it. The others were on my camera roll on my phone. From last winter from the dining room window and two from a trip to Vietnam. I trust you will know which is which. What do you think?

The color turquoise is a bit of both heaven and earth. The blue of the sky mixed with the green of the earth, it is a cheerful and happy color.

Turquoise, the stone, makes a special gift as it is said to be responsible for faithfulness and constancy in relationships. It is an inspirational color for me, a regular player in my creations.

Hydrangea Envy

I think I have admitted this before on this blog... I am not a gardener. I live in the South, where gardens are serious business. Patios lush with planters. Gardens that are planned to have color most of the year. Fountains, ornaments, leafy things that crawl and climb. Every Spring I swear I'll plant forsythia for its early riot of color. Then I see someone's gorgeous tulips and I think, next Fall, I am planting bulbs. And I always promise myself that I will properly prune my rosebush.

Instead, let's just say, my yard has a "natural" look. In the shady back there are loads of fern and rhododendron that grow in natural areas. Lots of trees and shrubs that don't require much attention. But the other day, out on a walk, I came across yard and after yard of unbelievable hydrangeas. These big fluffy balls of blue and lavender blooms are almost laughable in their abundance. The color is so saturated that it looks as though someone turned up the color volume with Photoshop. I had to stop in my tracks and face the facts - I had hydrangea envy.

I am usually pretty good about simply enjoying the fruits of my neighbors' labors in their gardens. But at this moment I was plotting. Could I get away with cutting some of these amazing bon-bons of flowers without my neighbor noticing? Could I actually ask for some cuttings, or does that violate some kind of gardening creed to which I was oblivious? I just had to have these gorgeous, over the top beauties.

So far I haven't done anything illegal. No midnight excursions with pruning shears. I still hold my breath when I walk by and wonder, how something so beautiful could bring me so close to the brink of criminal acts. Instead, I have decided to enjoy the bounty and pretend my property line extends across the street!

Just like earrings, the right choice of necklace can emphasize or deemphasize your face shape and completely change your look. Here is a brief but insightful look at the right kind of necklace for you.

Oval face (face is longer than it is wide, jaw line can be slightly smaller than the hairline, both are rounded)

Once again, I must tell you that you are incredibly lucky! Almost all necklaces look good on you and there are no definitive exceptions!

Square face (strong jaw line, cheek bones, chin, and hairline are about the same width, length and width of the face are the same)

Wearing a necklace with a short, fine chain with a small pendant will emphasize the angular nature of your face and will make your jawline look larger. To make your face look softer, try wearing a longer necklace or a necklace with a thicker chain and larger pendant.

Triangular face (narrow brow and wider jaw line)

If your face is triangular, the right necklace for you really depends on whether your jawline is angular or rounded. If angular, you should follow the suggestions for a square face, and if rounded you should see the suggestions for a round face.

Round face (soft and curved with equal length and width)

Pearls and round beads should be worn at a longer length, in order to prevent overemphasizing the roundness of your face. When choosing the size of the pearls or beads, you should consider the size of your facial features. The larger the beads are, the more they will emphasize the roundness of your face. Also, chokers create a horizontal line at the neck and will make your face look wider. In order to make your face look more oval, you should avoid wearing thin chains because they will make your face look larger.

Heart shaped face (wide brow and narrow chin)

Necklaces with an angular pendant directly under the chin will emphasize that stronger feature on your face. In order to make your face look more oval, try a choker or short necklace with a rounder shape.

Confessions of a Jewelry Supply Hoarder

The question I get most often is “Where do you get all your supplies? Do you travel?” The long and short answer is yes. I source my components from all over the globe, both when I travel and through the contacts that I have made over the years.

I have purchased jewelry components while trekking though ethnic minority villages in Northern Vietnam and at the Night Market in Luang Prabang, Laos. My biggest shopping trip of the year, however, is a little less exotic, but very rewarding - the annual, massive gem show in Tucson, AZ. This is where I meet with suppliers and buy treasures from all over the globe.

Over the years I have developed some wonderful sources, from Southeast and Central Asia to Africa and India. They know me well, what I like and what I will go nuts over. Some send me boxes to pick through, others send photos.

And, well, I am a shopper! I can’t resist loading up on all the wonderful things that provide inspiration and creative energy. My studio is brimming with beautiful things. Drawers and drawers of gemstones. Tibetan pendants. Afghani beads. African amber. Turquoise. Coral. And so many pearls. All of this is accompanied by findings, wire, tools and all of the little details that add the finishing touch.

Can I admit something to you? I am, in fact, a hoarder when it comes to my jewelry supplies. Lately my studio has been feeling a little crowded, cramped, over-stuffed. I feel a need to unload some of it. So, that is just what I am doing. I have set up a shop, on etsy.com, where I will start selling off some of the supplies in my studio to make room for more. Seems a little crazy, but if you make jewelry it is a benefit to you! I am selling items at the wholesale price, or less.

I will post new items regularly, as I make my way through the boxes and drawers in my studio. So keep checking in to see what’s new. And tell your jewelry making friends.

Accentuate the Positives: Discover the Perfect Earrings for Unique You

Finding the right earrings has a lot to do with your face shape. A basic rule of thumb: earrings with the same shape as your face emphasize that shape while earrings that contrast with your face shape do the opposite. The earrings that are unlike the shape of your face usually make your face seem more oval—the so-called “perfect” shape.

Oval face (face is longer than it is wide, jaw line can be slightly smaller than the hairline, both are rounded)

You are the luckiest of all! Pretty much all earrings shapes look good on you!

Square face (strong jaw line, cheek bones, chin, and hairline are about the same width, length and width of the face are the same)

Emphasize the more angular features of your face with square earrings or earrings that have sharp angles or make your face look rounder (especially your jawline) by wearing earrings with a rounder shape.
Rounded earrings will draw attention away from the jaw and make your face look longer.

Triangular face (narrow brow and wider jaw line)

Wearing earrings that are smaller on top and wider on the bottom mirror your face shape and amplify it.
To make your face look more oval you should wear earrings that sit on the ears (rather than below) and are more uniform in width.

Round face (soft and curved with equal length and width)

Round earrings, especially button-shaped, will make your face look more round. Dangly earrings, whether angular or curved, make your face less round and longer.

Heart shaped face (wide brow and narrow chin)

Earrings that are wider at the top and pointed at the bottom will emphasize your sharper chin. Drop earrings will make the top and bottom halves of your face look more balanced.

Now that you have these basic rules have fun trying different shapes and seeing what you like best on yourself! I know that I’ve certainly started choosing my earrings more carefully!

Happy Birthday May babies! Spring is in the air and everything is fresh and green. How perfect it is that your birthstone is emerald! I know I said the blogs about birthstones wouldn’t start till June, but emeralds are just so pretty I couldn’t wait (plus Judith showed me these gorgeous earrings and I felt inspired).

The intense green color of Emeralds (truly beloved by those of us who have been in the cast of The Wizard of Oz) is a fantastic reminder of spring and the liveliness that seems to come hand-in-hand with this time of year. The tiny fractures inside the gem are called “jardin”(garden) in French because of their resemblance to plants—another reminder of spring.

Ancient Egyptian culture highly esteemed the emerald. The Egyptians were known to engrave emeralds and bury them with the dead. Cleopatra had many emerald mines during her reign—it was her very favorite gem. It was said that when visiting dignitaries prepared to return home, Cleopatra gave them an emerald carved in her likeness as her farewell present. That’s a parting gift I would be happy to take!

Many believe that wearing emeralds brings wisdom, growth, and patience. Giving a gift with an emerald is supposed to be a symbol of love and fidelity—making it the perfect gift for an anniversary (good news for those of us who love the look of emeralds but were not fortunate enough to be born in May).

Happy birthday once again to all you lucky readers who have birthdays this month! Hopefully someone special will keep your birthday in mind and buy you an emerald or two of your own! (I highly recommend these fantastic earrings!)

Birthstones Rock!

I have always loved birthstones. I love the idea that a specific stone is attached to my identity. It feels really personal when someone gives me a gift with my birthstone (aquamarine!) in it. The gift-giver clearly paid special attention, and what’s better than receiving a well thought-out gift? Birthstones are so special and rich in tradition that for the next year, each month we will post a blog entry about that month’s birthstone!

Before we begin, however, here’s some background info on the tradition of birthstones. The Jewish Roman historian Josephus wrote that there was a connection between the stones in Aaron’s breastplate (Moses’ brother), the twelve months of the year, and the twelve signs of the zodiac. Ancient Jewish people wore one of these twelve stones according to their tribe. The connection with the zodiac came soon after that followed by a connection to the twelve-month calendar.

Birthstones regained popularity in Poland in the 15th century, where everyone wore the birthstone for each month. The power of each gem was said to be greater during its month. In 1912, the Jewelers of America officially adopted a list of modern birthstones and since that date have added less expensive stones to each month.

Most people have heard of traditional and modern birthstones but there are even more stones attached to your personal identity! There are Mystical Birthstones, Ayurvedic Birthstones, and different stones according to the signs of the zodiac. Mystical Birthstones come from Tibetan beliefs from over 1000 years ago. Ayurvedic Birthstones come from traditional Indian spiritual and medicinal beliefs dating back to 1500 BCE. Zodiac birthstones date back to before the creation of the 12-month calendar. During each sign its birthstone was said to have special power. Wearing that stone was supposed to help move the planets in helpful ways for the wearer.

The Symbolism of Hands

In everyday life I don’t think most people think about the value of their hands or their symbolic actions—the handshake, for example, is perhaps the most frequently used symbolic gesture to represent friendship, greeting, or the closing of a deal. However, hands are a big deal in art and jewelry all over the world and are represented well in many Judith Altman Designs pieces. Therefore, I decided to investigate what hands mean to these different cultures from all corners of the world.

In Asian cultures, the left hand represents yin and the right represents yang. The left is softer, symbolizing passiveness, justice, emotion, receiving, and the unconscious while the right is harder, symbolizing assertiveness, mercy, logic, giving, and the conscious. Together the hands represent allegiance, friendship, and the balance of the two sides. The positioning of hands is also extremely important in expressing the transference of divine power in Buddhism and Hinduism making hands major symbols in talismans of those religions.

In a totally different part of the world, in Celtic lore hands were a connection to power and a symbol of authority. They show balance and good judgment. Legend says that a Celtic King was actually dethroned because he lost one of his hands in battle. He was returned to the throne after one of his daughters gave him a silver hand to wear around his neck.

Moving back around the globe, hands are similarly significant in Middle Eastern culture. Though I always thought that the Hamsa was a Jewish symbol, it actually came from Islamic culture but can even be traced back further to a time before monotheistic faiths. In Islam the symbolic hand is called the Hand of Fatima and commemorates Fatima Zahra, the daughter of the Prophet Muhammad. The Hamsa/Hand of Fatima represents blessings, power, and strength and is thought to ward off the evil eye.

In North America, Native Americans use hands in art to show the presence of man and man’s work, achievements, and legacy. Mexican people made small gold or silver votive offerings in the shape of body parts as a prayer for that part of the body or in thanks for the ability to use that limb called Milagros. The most popular kind of Milagros was of the hand or the heart, hands because they are absolutely necessary for the agricultural life lived by many people in that region.

It seems to me that if cultures from everywhere around the globe value the image of a hand as protective or a sign of balance, there must be something universally true and important about our hands—something we should value more highly! So today think about all the things you do with your hands and the meaning you add to your life through that work, better yet think about the hand symbols in the art and jewelry around you (easily accessible examples are located at www.judithaltman.com!) and for one day try not to undervalue your frequently unappreciated hands.

Hi! I’m Jenny Kaplan and as an intern for Judith I will be her guest blogger for the month of May. I am a senior at Greensboro Day School and will be heading to Brown University next fall. I love the arts and enjoy participating in plays and singing groups at school.

As seniors at Greensboro Day, we spend our last month of school doing an internship in whatever area we choose in order to gain a meaningful experience in the working world prior to graduation. I chose to work for Judith (and luckily for me she agreed!) and have now been introduced to the fascinating world of Judith Altman Designs.

Though I have always appreciated the beauty of Judith’s designs, I don’t think I really grasped the meaning of each piece. Not only do many of the pieces I have seen include antique talismans blessing the wearer, but also the stones themselves are put together in a way that creates a unique energy. While I intend on writing about many of these fascinating antiques and stones during my time here, I thought I would start by talking about the symbolism behind a gem that has always been special to me: the pearl.

I distinctly remember my mother giving me a pair of pearl earrings when I was 11 or 12 that she was given during her childhood. Every time I put those earrings on (which is quite frequently because they seem to go with everything!) I am reminded of the earrings’ previous stories, of my mother’s adolescence in Detroit, Michigan, and of the additional stories I add to the earrings’ history with each wearing.

Pearls historically have been symbols of beauty, femininity, fertility, and rebirth. In Greek mythology, Aphrodite, the goddess of beauty, love, and sexual desires, rose out of the sea in a clam shell wearing only pearls. Contrastingly, pearls have also been historic symbols of purity and innocence. Ancient Romans had a fascination for pearls and believed they had medicinal and protective attributes while the ancient Chinese believed pearls symbolized wisdom, immortality, and light.

To me, pearls have always lived up to their reputation, filling me with a happy, distinctly girly energy that seems perfect to wear during our current beautiful spring weather. More significant than this energy, however, is the meaning I feel from my pearl earrings. Meaning is more valuable than just the attractiveness of a piece of jewelry and I think that is why I am fascinated by so many of the pieces Judith showed me yesterday during my orientation. Each piece has a unique story, energy, and feel making it more than a pretty adornment into a story that is ready to be furthered by a new wearer.

I have had an extremely productive week. It usually happens following a show. After a week or two of preparation, travel and being at a show I have a pent up need to be creative. While this week's productivity wasn't so much at my workbench as at my computer editing product photographs, it was still a week I am proud of. Completed projects, check marks on lists and crossing off to do's.

Today I ran out to the Post Office and as I did I stopped in my tracks. The view from every angle while heading down my driveway was filled with light, color and texture. I am ceaselessly amazed by the products of mother nature and I always aim for my work to convey the breathtaking colors and textures of the natural world. So I stopped. Took a breath and took in the beauty.

I wanted to share it with you, despite the fact that I am not a gardener. My rose bush is weighted down with flowers and needs a trellis. My ivy has over-flowed the pot and is trailing across the brick patio I haven't swept in days. And I found one crowded-in, hidden azalea between boxwoods still with fresh blooms as the others in the yard are rusting.

I hope that you have moments like these, where you just have to stop and take it in for a moment. The Post Office was still there when I got there. But I was richer for the moments I took to just be.

Last month a talented young friend of mine, Tace Joelle Samet, did a photography essay for a class at The George Washington University, from which she is about to graduate. She did a period shoot, using rich and layered backgrounds, period costumes and Judith Altman Designs jewelry. I thought I would share some of the beautiful results. The necklaces in these photos are from a series of Tibetan prayer boxes done in high-karat gold combined with coral, turquoise, jade and malachite.

These are from just a few of the shots in her project, further cropped to emphasize the jewelry. While these are not the final project pix, I think they look great. Tace, you get an A in my book!

I am so excited about all these leather cuffs in the Spring collection that I am sharing another glimpse of what's to come. Since ancient times charms with special symbols were used to bring blessings and guard against evil, sickness and all kinds of misfortune. Protective images were worn on the body to bring good luck, to heal, enhance fertility and ward off evil. This new collection - Tokens and Icons - honors many traditions and symbols of protection and blessing.

This Spring 2010 collection highlights multi-cultural protective and spiritual symbols. In the photo above there is a Buddhist auspicious sign, a persian coin, a protective key escutcheon, the symbol of Solomon, an Egyptian scarab and a St Francis medal. Each are hung on freshwater pearls that have been hand knotted on leather. They look great alone, or layered with other pieces in the collection or pieces you may already own.

This upcoming line includes a Blessed Buddha collection highlighting Buddha amulets and Auspicious Monk medals that have undergone a sanctification ceremony involving prayers and blessings by respected Buddhist monks in Thailand. By the monks recitation of prayers it is believed that they are able to concentrate their mystic power which is then transferred to the amulet.

The collection is multi-cultural and highlights many symbols -- the Hamsa or Hand of Fatima, Kabbalah amulets, Coptic crosses, vintage love tokens, antique I Ching coins, Buddha amulets and Hindu gods and goddesses. Many of the pendants and charms are vintage and are from far away places. Their patina and wear is evidence of their remarkable history.

Even if you don't believe in their magical powers, the amulets are all quite lovely and represent the beliefs of others throughout history. Yesterday I heard someone on the radio say that the appropriate greeting this new year is "Happy Better New Year". The very fact that this has been a tough year all around makes me keenly aware of what I have and hold dear.

So, as 2009 comes to a close and I "take inventory", I feel grateful for many things. I would like to take this opportunity to express my appreciation for all of my wonderful customers. Your business is deeply appreciated. My relationship with you gives me reason to celebrate and to look forward to a fresh new year.

Lady Apples

I saw lady apples today in the market. You know, those miniature yellow and red apples, about the size of a ping-pong ball. Every time I see them I am reminded of my grandmother. She loved those lady apples. I never buy them, but I always linger for a moment and remember her. My grandmother had a great influence on my life and I like to think that I resemble her - if not physically then in terms of certain traits and characteristics. I named my first daughter for her and I cherish the times when I daydream about her presence in my life.

My grandmother had one of those amazing life stories. Born in Russia (now it is Moldova) she was poor, persecuted and suffered a great deal of loss early in her life. When she was young her father owned a bookstore where famous philosophers and writers were known to hang out. But at an early age her mother died. When she was not yet a teenager her father and older brother came to America to make money and later send for them leaving his three daughters with their elderly grandmother. And as so many stories like this go, the grandmother died, World War I broke out and for many years my grandmother never heard from her father and brother. She and her younger sisters survived purely by their resourcefulness and will.

My grandmother had a striking sense of style and was a talented dressmaker. When she came to the US, she never worked in a sweat shop like many of her generation of immigrants to NYC. She worked on fine dresses, deftly able to hand roll a silk hem, or hand bead a dress bodice. She had amazing talent and an incredible sense of style. My grandmother lived with us when I was growing up from my tween years until I left for college. I spent many hours sitting with her and watching her work, talking, answering her inquiries about my day, my friends, my adventures.

Later in her life she started making exquisite life-like beaded flowers from tiny seed beads. She made orange and black poppies and fresh white daisies. Her hands were never idle - even when she sat and talked with you she was always folding her skirt fabric or apron or purse handle into different fan patterns. She could make something out of nothing. A gown from a piece of cloth. Fabulous embroidered table clothes from ordinary fabric and thread. And flowers from beads and wire.

My grandmother lived to be 96 years old. She was vibrant and with-it until her very last year. Even in her early 90s she had a great wardrobe - pant suits, dresses, blouses that she always “tweaked” in some way to express herself “just so”. Some days when I am working at my workbench, especially beading, I think of her. I think that maybe, just maybe, my work creating jewelry, stringing beads and working in patterns ties me back to her. I only hope that I possess some degree of her talent and style. I am grateful for her influence on my life and for the warm, well-worn memories that I have of her.

He collects and sells the most amazing artifacts from around the world (and produces some fabulous reclaimed wood furniture). He is curious, adventurous and a really cool guy. Layer it on thick...

Layering necklaces is a technique that has been around for years and is still going strong. It is understandable as it allows you to vary your look, be creative and create custom looks. So next time you are trying to decide which necklace to wear, consider wearing them all. OK, not really, that would be overdoing it. But with some editing and experimentation you can accomplish some interesting looks.

On this Fall’s runways designers showcased layered and stacked jewelry, really piling it on. Nested bib-necklaces closely circling the neck and stacked bangles from wrist to elbow were most dominant.

Here are a few pointers to consider when layering up:

Start with a long necklace and then add a shorter pendant.
Layers of stones work best if you stick to one color story. Definitely mix stone necklaces with metal chains for a textural look.
It is safest to stick with one metal - silver with silver, gold with gold. If you mix, which can be a very sophisticated look but harder to pull off, combine similar finishes, ideally antiqued gold and antiqued silver.
If you want to be more subtle, try layering delicate chains of various lengths but similar widths or thicknesses.
Wear all of this over solid basics to highlight the jewelry and not overdo it.
Remember, long necklaces create long vertical lines which offer a flattering look.

If you are uncertain, then look for necklaces that are already layered for you. And then, go ahead and pile it on!

Pearls... they have been called God’s Tears

Pearls, the gem of Queens and the queen of gems. These little spherical gems, grown in oysters (or mussels in freshwater), are amazing accidents of nature. Pearls are the natural reaction of the oyster to an irritant. A genuine pearl (whether occurring naturally or cultured) starts with a grain of sand or a small foreign object that becomes lodged within the oyster. As a reaction, the oyster secretes a substance to cover the irritant and soften its edges, making it less irritating. This substance is called nacre. Over time, layer upon layer of nacre is applied to the irritant and thus a pearl is born. The more layers of nacre, the larger the pearl, the deeper the shine and lustre on the surface - the more beautiful the pearl!

Both naturally occurring and cultured pearls are genuine pearls (vs. imitation pearls which are man made beads of glass or other materials which are made to look like pearls). Natural pearls happen by accident in the oyster and are found by accident as well, making them rare and valuable. On the other hand cultured pearls are “farmed”. Oysters are suspended on racks in ponds, irritants are inserted, time passes while the oyster covers the irritant with layers of nacre, and then after a number of years the pearls are harvested. As a result of this human intervention cultured pearls are more plentiful. And that means that what used to be the exclusive purview of royalty and aristocrats is now more abundant and affordable.

The quality, size and shape of freshwater cultured pearls vary widely with the depth and quality of the nacre being the greatest determinant of quality. Some pearl farmers pull their crop too early (trying to cash in) before the nacre layers have gotten deep enough and hard enough. This impatience creates an inferior pearl. Oysters require two or more years to create a beautiful pearl.

Once pearls leave the belly of the oyster, they need people in order to remain beautiful. If they are left unworn in a vault or a drawer, they can turn yellow and brittle. But worn on the skin they become more luminescent. Stories abound through history of palace servants warming their mistress’s pearls by wearing them while doing chores during the day so that when the mistress donned them in the evening they would be warm and luminous.

Here are a few of the dimensions to consider when assessing pearls:

Size - ranges dramatically from small seed pearls to 20mm or larger.

Luster - is the depth and glow on the surface of a pearl. It is an indication of the amount of time the pearl spent in the oyster and the number of layers of nacre that the oyster applied to the pearl. Pearls should have a luminous glow and depth.

Shape - can vary greatly, especially with many of the newer cultured pearl processes. As for round pearls, one rarely finds a perfectly round pearl. In fact today many interesting shapes add value and interest, such as baroque, stick or coin shapes.

Surface - the surface of a pearl, while never without a blemish, should be smooth and without cracks or peeling. Again, some pearls have unique and interesting surface bumps and textures that can make them more valuable and interesting.

Color - natural pearls are white, cream or black. Otherwise, there is a huge industry of dyed and color treated pearls. Today a cultured pearl can be had in almost any shade of any color!

SEPTEMBER - This month we are celebrating the fifth anniversary of Judith Altman Designs! As I reflect back over these years, I think mostly of the people that I have had the honor of getting to know. From my "virtual" company cohort of independent sales reps, marketing peeps, graphic designers and suppliers; to fabulous customers, both the retailers and the wearers of my creations.

And while these years have presented me with many new and daunting challenges, I have grown from them. I have also derived great joy from my successes and have learned to appreciate the fullness and richness that life has to offer. I embarked on this journey, leaving corporate life, seeking more authentic work, where I could feel more closely and creatively connected to the products of my efforts. And that is what I celebrate this month.

I am ever grateful for my creative studio time that is like a meditation for me. And for the wonderful and caring friends and colleagues who have supported, encouraged, nudged and mentored me. And most of all to my muses - the fabulous women who wear my creations. Thank you!

The Figure 5 by Robert Indiana (above) holds special meaning for me. A piece that he did in this series hung outside my boss's office at my last corporate job. It was never appreciated by many in that office. It's value as art escaped them. But to me it was like a siren, calling me to change. It was one of many signs that I took to show me the way back to a life filled with art, creative people and artistic sensibilities. The story is that the series was inspired by a poem by William Carlos Williams, which I also take as a call for waking up and paying attention to what is important.

Size Matters

There are few things that I love more than watching women shop and try on jewelry. What we select often has to do with a specific outfit, a particular piece of clothing or material like a birthstone. What strikes me is that some women know so well what works for them, and others have preconceived ideas that are not always right. Size of jewelry is one of them. "I'm too small to wear this" or "I'm too big to wear this" is so often uttered and so often incorrect. Significant, statement making pieces can really be worn by everyone with the guidance of a few basic concepts.

The size of the materials in a necklace and its construction should correspond to the features of your face not to the frame of your body. In other words, someone with fine, detailed features, no matter their body size, can wear significant pieces of jewelry made up of smaller beads and components - such as multiple strands of smaller beads. A woman with larger features - large eyes or a big smile - can wear large stones or pendants, no matter how petite her frame. Either woman can wear something substantial and statement-making by donning either multi-strands of smaller stones or pearls, or singular larger stones and pendants. Body size really doesn't matter - which is why jewelry shopping is so much more rewarding than clothing shopping. Something always fits!

Eight Auspicious Symbols

As many of you know, I adore collecting and using ethnographic components in my jewelry, often from Asia and especially with roots in Buddhism. Many of you ask about the symbols used on these pieces. Called the Eight Auspicious Symbols, they each represent something desirable and meaningful. I don't know for sure if wearing them brings us any of these desired conditions, but I figure it can't hurt.

Parasol - Protection from suffering, obstacles, illness and harmful forces.

Treasure Vase - Symbolizes long life, wealth, prosperity and liberation.

Conch Shell - Awakening from ignorance. Reminds one to work for the benefit of others and oneself.

Victory Banner - Symbolizes the victory over body, speech and the mind of negative energy.

Golden Fishes - Represents happiness, spontaneity, abundance of joy and good fortune.

Lotus - Symbolizes the purity of body, speech and mind.

Endless Knot - To perform endless practice of wisdom and compassion.

Dharma Wheel - To experience the joy of wholesome deeds and liberation.

When an accessory makes all the difference

If you haven't yet heard about The Uniform Project, then you must check it out. The adorable Sheena Matheiken has committed to wearing the same dress for an entire year (don't worry, she actually has seven identical dresses, one for each day of the week), making it interesting and different each day with accessories and creative ensembles. She is using primarily vintage, hand-made and hand-me-down accessories to vary her look each day as an exercise in sustainable fashion.

The Uniform Project is also a year-long fund raiser for the Akanksha Foundation, a grassroots movement that is revolutionizing education in India. At the end of a year of daily creative accessorizing, all contributions to The Uniform Project will go toward Akanksha's School Project to fund uniforms and other educational expenses for slum children in India.

A few interesting thoughts here. First, in this economic climate, if you want to update your look but can't afford a new season of clothes, then follow Sheena's lead and keep wearing what you have but add a few new accessories - like jewelry! This is the time when our itch for something new can be scratched without breaking the bank. I am sure that you can create a new look with last year's clothing and a new piece of jewelry if Sheena can do it every day for a year! This is one way that an accessory can make a huge difference.

But most importantly Sheena demonstrates that her various daily accessories can grab our attention (I am hooked, obsessively checking out the daily photos on her website) and can fuel fundraising for an important cause.

I have contact Sheena about donating some jewelry (keep watching her daily photos to spot some Judith Altman Designs), and I will be donating a percentage of my July through September sales to her cause.

HOT Dallas

Boy, it sure was hot last week in Dallas. Exhibiting at the Dallas Home and Gift Market was one thing, but the outside temps were over 100-degrees each day I was there. Had a great time, opened some new accounts and met some great folks. Oh yeah, and ate some really good food!

A big thanks to Kim Pettigrew and Georgina Weddell, the fabulous women who own in-detail, who hosted me in their show room. As a result I was surrounded by beautiful things and lots of very nice showroom staff.

GREENSBORO, N.C. - For the last five years, Judith Altman has spent her days in her studio on Friendly Ave., crafting one-of-a-kind jewelry that others will soon cherish. But it wasn't always like that for Altman, who spent time in senior management before following her dreams of designing jewelry.

"I like to think of them as something a woman buys and wears to express herself and her style," says Altman, who fashions large, distinctive pieces from gemstones and artifacts collected from around the world.

"It's just a personal passion that I've always had and wanted to do myself and found that it worked for me," she says.

And has it. Since launching her own line, Altman has sold her jewelry as far away as Saudi Arabia.

"In many ways, it has exceeded what I thought it would be and, in many ways, it's been enormously more challenging than I thought it would be," she says.

With her signature collection retailing for between $300 and $600, Altman sells most of her work in galleries, art museum stores and high-end boutiques across the country. But for Altman, the sale isn't savored as much as the connection to her clients.

"The most rewarding thing is to see someone putting a piece of my jewelry on. It's not just about me and my creative process, but now I've connected with another person and it makes them feel good, so that's the reward right there," she says.

Another reward for Altman is traveling the globe to find the many components her imagination calls for. Otherwise, you'll find her in her Greensboro studio, creating world-class jewelry made right here in North Carolina.

Musings

Waiting out the economic recovery, I notice that there are some behaviors and concerns on the part of the consumer that have shifted, and may live beyond the (hopefully) inevitable recovery. The fast paced, fast food, mass produced, high volume world just seems to have less appeal and there seems to be a growing and welcomed interest in local, crafted, individualized products and service providers. I, of course, couldn't be happier! There is clearly a greater interest in value and quality. Cheap, mass produced products are less satisfying and seem almost cartoon-like now. The process of finding locally made/grown/provided products is gratifying in and of itself. The exclusivity of a hand-crafted, one-of-a-kind product appeals to something deeper in us. An interaction and relationship with a person who actually makes something - boutique winemaker, jewelry designer, artisan baker - draws us. As a designer and creator of products that each hold a little bit of me in each of them, I am gratified by this shift.

JuJu Video

Peace through Music

Artistic collaborations are wonderfully rewarding and they result in something so unique and inspiring. Playing for Change is an extraordinary and inspiring musical collaboration. Mark Johnson and a crew traveled the world recording fabulous street artists performing the same songs. By letting each artist hear the other artist's recording and perform "with" the other artists they created virtual performances of these artists playing together. These musicians never met... they were never even in the same place. Recorded on five continents, these soundtracks are amazing in and of themselves. What makes it all the more amazing is the wonderfully produced video of the artists performing and the environments in which they sing (these guys are filmmakers so the video is fabulous).

In a few days the Spring highpointMARKET starts. As always I will be at Suites at Market Square (M-320) with a large collection of new necklaces, earrings, bracelets, cufflinks and (new!) brooches. Stop by and shop - all wholesale prices and no minimum!

For the past year-plus I have had the pleasure of working with two very innovative women, Sheryl Bryan and Patricia Chrisley, on the launch of their new company, JuJu. They are offering a fabulous new product - jewelry for your home! Beautiful gem encrusted ornaments that you can drape over a headboard (or on an armoire, or mantel, or...anywhere) to add a gorgeous detail and focal point to a room. These pieces are encrusted with pearls, amethyst, garnets, turquoise...and are punctuated with carved pieces of jade and cinnebar. They are covered in hammered metals and lucious metallic printed leather.

I have thoroughly enjoyed working on these designs and with the fabulous team that Patricia and Sheryl have pulled together. Hopefully you will see my signature on these pieces. These are the result of an exciting design collaboration with Lyn Hurst of Lyn Hurst Designs. In addition to the JuJu furniture jewelry pieces, JuJu is offering a coordinated collection of headboards, cornices and tie-backs -- all jewelry-inspired and gemstone encrusted!

The Journey to a Million Buddhas

I have just returned from a wonderful trip through southeast Asia and thought I would share some of my experiences. In some ways it is a foreign and far-away place, and in other ways travel there reminds us how small a world it really is!

I was particularly focused on spending some time with some of the ethnic minorities in northern Vietnam. Many of these hill tribes are famous for their silver work, and I have incorporated some of their jewelry components into my jewelry. So, we took a night train from Hanoi to Lao Cai on the Chinese border, and then rode for an hour up the mountains to Sapa (switch backs, dense fog, single lane with on-coming traffic - I really wondered if we would survive this!). From Sapa we trekked to Lao Chai, a Black Hmong ethnic minority village. From Lao Chai we trekked to Tavan, where the Giay ethnic minority hill tribe lives. Along the way we were joined by some of the ethnic minority women (wanting to sell their needlework and silverwork to us). Here you see us with our Northface backpacks next to some of the Hmong women carrying their basket "backpacks" and babies strapped on with blankets.

We spent most of the trip in Vietnam. First let me dispell any notions that you may have about the Vietnamese having bad feelings toward Americans. While the older Vietnamese don't want to talk about the war (they call it the American war), the Vietnamese in general have a particular affinity for Americans. They love Americans. In his wonderful book titled "Vietnam Now", author David Lamb says about the relationship between Vietnam and America: "...Americans and Vietnamese share an almost inexplicable bond. It is not the bond of natural friendship that Americans might feel for, say, Australians...rather it is something deeper and more mysterious. It is a liaison woven in tragedy and common suffering...perhaps as much as anything, the bond is rooted in the realization that the war changed the United States as much as it did Vietnam"

Now Vietnam is a country on a rising arc of development, with juxtapostions of old and new. Old women wearing their conical hats squat on the street and sell fruit and food. At the same time, whirling around them are millions of motor bikes and young Vietnamese on cell phones. More than two thirds of this country was born after 1975 and they are full of energy and drive.

By comparison our time in Laos was calm and quiet. Vietnam has a population of 85 million, Laos on the other hand, 5.5 million. Overall I called this trip "The Journey to a Million Buddhas", because I think I may have seen that many while visiting the multitude of Buddhist temples.

In Luang Prabang, Laos we had a guide who had spent over a decade as a monk, and is now a guide and teacher of meditation. As he brought us through the National Museum I commented on the spectacular silver pieces on exhibit from the last Royal reign which ended in 1975. He told me that this silversmith was still alive and had a studio in Luang Prabang. I asked if he could take me to see him, and in no time we were at the elder Thitpheng Maniphone's studio and shop. Thitpheng Maniphone had been the royal silversmith, reputed to have made many of the beautiful items in the National Museum, including the King's crown. The master, along with a number of assistants, were busy making silver vessels for Buddhist offerings. The entire vessel is decorated using the techniques of repoussé and chasing. This is a technique where the metal is decorated by hammering from the inside (repoussé) and outside (chasing). While repoussé is used to work on the reverse of the metal to form a raised design, chasing is used to refine the design on the front of the work by sinking the metal. It was truly awe inspiring to stand and watch him work. Here are a few photos:

This trip was enormously rewarding, challenging and curious. I enjoyed time with my family, and met interesting people along the way.

Vietnam is a country full of promise, filled with people who are hard working and industrious. Unfortunately there is still grinding poverty, disease and many undeveloped ways. But since the Doi Moi (the government's free market reforms) everyone is an entrepreneur of sorts and with this the standard of living is rising, albeit slowly. I was happy to see that so many artisans are relying on their skills to make a living. While there are factories going up, and most Vietnamese are farmers, there is still a great pride among these artisans that they are able to use their craft to support themselves and their families. I will close with pictures of various artisans - weavers, potters, silversmith, wood carver. They were truly inspiring.

My Studio

My studio is an ever evolving space. Having just completed multiple selling shows in October, I have been busy putting things back into order. Now that the boxes are unpacked and the surplus packing materials put away, I am feeling ready to create.

I find that my creativity is very sensitive to my environment. As I get busy making pieces, I pull out lots of materials, keep them around, re-arrange them, examine the juxtapositions. Before I know it I am in a frenzy. And then, just as quickly I have to stop and clean up. Clear my head and focus. And the cycle repeats.

Thought I’d share some with you about my studio. First, it is a private space. I am not an artist that works publicly. My friend Anita (who is with me at shows and many of you know her) always wants me to do demonstrations, saying that customers would love to see me in action. But being on display crimps my creative processes so I have never done this. In fact, I don’t open my studio to the public. For me, the creative process…getting into the “zone”…is something that requires a certain focus and degree of solitude.

It is November in North Carolina. A really beautiful time of year, the foliage is turning amazing shades of orange, yellow, red and purple (carnelian, citrine, coral and amethyst). This is always very inspiring for me. It started with the skylight over my desk in the office this morning. Yesterday’s rain brought down a lot of leaves and some were plastered to the window. In the background, blue sky and tall trees. That caused me to go to each window and photograph the view. So here are some views out the skylight and windows of my studio. Enjoy!

Recipe for Cleaning Tarnished Jewelry

I have had numerous requests for an easy way to remove tarnish from metal jewelry. Of course there are many commercial products to polish both silver and brass and these are all reasonable choices. This technique uses ingredients you most likely have on hand and is very easy to perform. It works for silver, brass or any metal jewelry that gets tarnished. It does not result in a high shine but it does remove tarnish. This works well for pieces you might have from the Artisan Collection and will bring it back to a nice finish if it has "aged" too much for your taste.

Ingredients:
>glass dish
>aluminum foil
>baking soda
>boiling water
>tarnished metal jewelry

First, line a glass dish with aluminum foil. Then place the jewelry on the foil in one layer (don't overcrowd the pieces). Be sure that all of the jewelry is in contact with the foil. Sprinkle the jewelry with a heavy layer of baking soda. Pour boiling water (and I mean boiling!) over the whole arrangement to cover and let it sit for 10 minutes. Remove the jewelry, rinse, dry and wear!

Another highpointMARKET has come and gone. It is the most intense show ever...with showrooms open for seven consecutive days, eleven hours a day. It is reported that 85,000 buyers come into town for this show (really, a collection of shows). After doing this Market for a number of years, I enjoy it more and more. The highlight for me is visiting with my customers and meeting new customers. We take out family photos, share pictures of kids and grandkids, and in some cases dogs!

I have been delighting in a long stretch of uninterrupted studio time. Flush with loads of new materials, and having completed a move into a new, larger studio space, I have been creating many new pieces for spring. As usual, themes have developed. I have become interested in ethnic pieces incorporating ornamentative components from indigenous cultures. I have also been exploring some new structures for necklaces and bracelets. Inspiration

I am so often asked where I get my inspiration. First I would have to say that I am inspired by the beauty of forms and shapes in nature. The stones inspire me. Ethnic traditions and cultures are major sources of inspiration for my designs. Architecture and structural design is a fascination to me. Current design and fashion are inevitable influences. I try to avoid trends and consider my designs trend-sensitive rather than trend-centered. Inspiration is all around and for me design is an intuitive process, a process of discovery.

Looking toward Fall

With summer as ripe as it is, I start to think about Fall. I design for Fall. I start thinking about shopping for Fall. I look forward to the change. And then I realize it isn't even August yet, and here in the South, summer lasts two plus months more!

I am so excited to announce a new line called MASON ALTMAN, which is a collaboration between myself and Wendi Mason of the Indigo Bead Studio. This is an affordable, hand crafted line which we have carefully designed and is being made by artisans in both Bali and the US. Debuting with Fall 2007, The Artisan Collection utilizes hand crafted materials, assembled by hand. This results in jewelry that still has the touch of the artisan in every piece.

The collection is a highly coordinated collection featuring hand forged brass, turquoise, red coral, quartz and freshwater pearls. Each piece is designed to work alone, or together in combinations, multiplying the possibilities each day for the woman wearing it!

I get so many people asking me why I don't sell online on my website. For the most part, I am committed to supporting my lovely retailers. They provide beautiful environments and personal help with every purchase, and I am more focused on the design, production and wholesaling. This is still the case, however, over the years I have built up some inventory in my studio from previous seasons. The Meaning of Jewelry

Jewelry is one of the oldest forms of self-expression. More than just something sparkly and shiny, jewelry has been imbued with meaning and communication all throughout history. Amulets that protect, rings that indicate marital status, gemstones with healing powers, jet jewelry for mourning. Demonstrations of power, love, status, religion and wealth. Jewelry is a form of personal expression for both the wearer and the artist. Art as communication.

I have always been intrigued by the many jewelry components depicting Buddha, and other eastern symbols of protection and healing. I am drawn to Buddha pendants, Tibetan healing stones, Dharma wheels and Dorje pestles. These “auspicious symbols” seem to speak to me more so these days as horrible stories of war and massacres fill the news. We could all use a little protection these days, an amulet to keep us safe, or to remind us of the good in the world.

Here are some of the pieces that I have been inspired to create, as a meditation on protection, growth, healing and prosperity.

American Craft Council Show

Just returned from the American Craft Council Fine Craft Wholesale Show in Baltimore. This show is a premiere venue for retailers to connect with American crafts people. Selected through a rigorous peer-review process, the craft exhibitors create unique displays of their work and are present throughout the shows to meet directly with buyers. The hall was filled with extraordinary talent -I met so many wonderful artists. I also met many wonderful, energetic gallery owners. Here are a few of my designs that were exhibited at the show.

Here is a sneak peek at some new designs for 2007. I continue to be very interested in pendants, vintage components and longer silhouettes. I make each pendant individually by making a "collage" of various vintage components and gemstones. I then hang them from either vintage chain or gemstones, or both.

Water Wear for the Holidays

International Home Furnishings Market a Big Success

Sales of Judith Altman Designs were brisk in High Point at the Suites at Market Square during the International Home Furnishings Market which ended this past Sunday. Although overall Market traffic was down, there was a lot of activity at the Judith Altman Designs space. The Signature Collection sold well, and the new Patina Collection, appealing to hip boutiques and buyers, was a big hit. It was great to see my regular customers, and to meet new ones.

The discovery of a cache of naturally aged vintage chains, originally used by the famous European fashion designers of the ‘60’s and ‘70’s, was a powerful inspiration for North Carolina jewelry designer, Judith Altman. A serendipitous contact made at a jewelry supply show resulted in a collection of vintage-accented copper, brass and gold chains and pendants to be introduced at the Fall High Point Market as The Patina Collection.

“When I found these chains and learned of their provenance, I wanted to create fashion-forward designs that enhanced their vintage appeal. I have embellished them with swinging tassels and semi-precious gems and pearls creating long, layered silhouettes in tune with today’s hottest look. Fall 2006 Silhouettes

Fall 2006 continues to include bold multi-strand necklaces and unique pendants for which the Signature collection has become known. Earrings range from long linear designs to chandeliers and clusters. Bracelets include dramatic cuff styles, with multi-strands. Central to most designs is a beautiful clasp, often the focal point of the bracelet or necklace.

The newest additions to the collection are a unique line of gemstone cufflinks, highlighting beautifully cut singular gemstones, as well as cluster and flower arrangements of gemstones and freshwater pearls.

Also added this Fall is the very exciting Patina Collection with its long, layered silhouettes, vintage accents, pendants with swinging tassels and glints of copper, brass and gold.
